Yoga for Runners

A few years ago I had the pleasure of sitting in on a presentation with the author of Yoga for Runners, Christine Felstead. Christine spoke about the safeguards of yoga and the role yoga plays with preventing running injuries. Back then I was new to running and hadn’t realized the importance of the two combined and had focused my energy on building up my stamina. However, now reflecting back, I can’t imagine one without the other and how beneficial practicing yoga has been for my half marathon training.

Running is very repetitive, as it is one constant motion for miles upon miles. This can cause tightness in the leg muscles, sore knees, tight hips and hamstrings. Muscles become shorter and tighter, which makes the body unstable and ends up putting more pressure on joints, bones, and muscles. In the past “pre-yoga”, I had experienced this tightness which led to  knee pain whenever I was running longer distances. It was frustrating and a major roadblock to pushing myself further. I knew I had to do something to compensate if I wanted to continue running. Since then, practicing yoga has helped loosen and lengthen my muscles making my body more flexible and resilient to injury (no knee pain!!). I have noticed that my body is more stable and my runs are stronger, making running even more enjoyable.

Not only has yoga improved my strength and flexibility, but it has also been instrumental in my mental focus and breathing. Mindfulness and being in the present moment  during each run has carried me distances when my legs were ready to give up. My breathing practiced in yoga has harmonized with my running routine, breathing more strong and consistent and allowing myself to push that extra mile.

Post run yoga sessions are essential for me at this point. Nothing feels better after a long run than a good stretch and taking the time to thank my body for pushing through the miles. Here are some poses you can try at home.

All in the Quest of a Gourmet Jerky – SUPPLY & DEMAND JERKY CO.

Over the last five months Chris and I have picked up a new hobby, leading us on the quest to perfect an all natural, quality crafted beef jerky. Our experience thus far, has been quite the ride, from crafting the best flavours and getting the texture just right; to finding the best packaging and creating a kickass name and logo. We are extremely thankful to our friends and family for their support along the way. Thanks for the repeated sampling (our apologies for the not so good trials) and thank you for the positive and constructive feedback, it has helped tremendously!

We are well on our way to perfecting the brand and now want to share the news with all of you to see what the public response is like. We have lots planned for Supply & Demand Jerky Co., and hope you will join this journey with us.

THIEF

Let me introduce you to an impressively talented artist Leanne Thief. Not only is Leanne a brilliant artist but she is also my ultra rad sis. Leanne is a tattoo artist, working in Port Moody, BC at Black Rabbit Tattoo Studio. Her style is neotraditional tattoos with bold line work, vibrant and saturated colour. I can’t even explain how amazing and meticulous she is with her work. See for yourself; follow her on Instagram @leannethief or check her out at www.leannethief.com

When it comes to fashion, Leanne and I have always had such different styles, she undeniably has a much edgier and cool disposition than myself. Growing up, I was often caught raiding her closet for something out of my ordinary to wear. I loved having two completely different closets of options to choose from, although I don’t think she felt the same way. When Leanne showed me the tanks and t-shirts, I knew she hit it head on! This was now my way of borrowing something of hers, a country apart. She killed it with her first design launch, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one and I knew that I wouldn’t be alone.  What she had created was what I and so many others are constantly out on the look for. Something new, something cool, and something different! As soon as I posted to social media, there was an instant buzz from friends wanting to get their hands on one. That’s when I knew this wouldn’t be the last of THIEF designs. Stay tuned for future tanks and tees.

If you are interested, get at me-  tanks are $30, tee’s $20 (+shipping).

Take a look at how bomb these friends look!

Can’t BEET this Hummus

I hope this post gets you on team beet (if you aren’t already), as there are so many benefits that come along with this crimson veg.

  • High source of energy
  • Fights inflammation
  • Can help lower blood pressure
  • Anti-Cancer properties
  • High in vitamins & minerals
  • Helps mental health
  • Cleanses & detoxifies the body
  • Natural aphrodisiac
  • Good for weight management

You can’t beet that!  🙂

I am trying to find more interesting ways to fit beets into my daily diet, but always end up roasting or juicing. Which are both great, but I need to start switching things up. This weekend I made Beet Hummus. It was a great change to my traditional chickpea hummus and just as easy. Simply swap your chickpeas with some raw beets.

I was super pleased with the outcome. It was fresh, earthy, sweet, and absolutely delicious. And thanks to their added benefits, I now have a new go to hummus recipe. Here it is-

  • 3 raw beets, cubed
  • 1 lemon, juice and zest
  • 1.5 tbsp of tahini
  • 1 tsp of cumin
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • salt and pepper to taste

Beet Prep

Combine all ingredients in food processor and puree. Keep adding water until you reach desired consistency. Top with lemon zest and pepper and serve with your favourite vegetables or crackers.
